Excerpt from Twelve Years Study of the Eastern Question: In Bulgaria; Being A; Revised Edition of a Residence in Bulgaria
As an excuse for the many shortcomings and defects of their book, the Authors must state that it was written with out the possibility of access to any works of reference, either historical or statistical, and amidst many interruptions from illness and other causes.
When this work was commenced some months since, it was intended to be merely a description of the manners and customs of the people, but as it proceeded, the Authors found themselves irresistibly compelled to allude to the many grievances and defects of organization which distin guish this country above all others, and thus the book has assumed a more political character than they at first intended.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Bulgarian Rayah, the Christian population living under Ottoman rule in the 19th century. The author, a keen observer of Eastern Europe, provides a vivid portrait of everyday life in Bulgarian villages, detailing everything from the architecture of their homes to the intricate details of their dress. The book delves into the cultural and social landscape of the Bulgarian Rayah, exploring their superstitions, customs, and struggles. The author also examines the complexities of their relationship with the Ottoman administration, highlighting the Rayah's discontent with the existing system and their hopes for a more equitable future. The book contrasts the Rayah's lives with the experiences of the Ottoman Turks, providing a nuanced look at both Christian and Muslim communities in this tumultuous period. The author offers a compelling argument that while the Rayah may have been unjustly portrayed as victims, the Turks too faced challenges, including those stemming from internal corruption and foreign influence. This insightful work provides a unique perspective on a period of intense change and social upheaval, challenging common assumptions and misconceptions about the Ottoman Empire and its diverse population.
