This book presents the political ideas of legendary Labour leader J.H. Thomas, who during World War 1, was one of the first Labour members to hold a high position in the coalition government. Thomas's vision is of a peaceful socialist revolution that will see England become a paradise of universal prosperity and perfect social justice. He sets out a sweeping program of nationalization, radical reforms, and increased social welfare spending aimed at achieving these goals. However, the author, though not unsympathetic to Thomas's ends, nevertheless points out that the Labour leader makes some grandiose and questionable predictions and, when discussing the possible means by which the revolution can be achieved, sometimes sounds more like a revolutionary syndicalist than a Fabian socialist. Despite these warnings, Thomas's ideas provide a unique and important historical insight into the evolution of Labour's political ideas in the early part of the 20th century.
