Is the Higher Criticism Scholarly? A clear, evidence-based challenge to modern ปscholarship
This booklet presents a defender of the Old Testament who argues that biblical controversies should rest on verifiable facts, not subjective opinion. It chronicles a scholar’s lifelong plan to study languages and sources to illuminate Scripture with careful, original evidence.
In accessible terms, the work frames how linguistic and historical data support the reliability of older biblical texts. It contrasts exhaustive philology with criticism that cites doubtful conclusions, and it explains how ancient languages and literary forms align with the Bible’s claims. The presentation aims to help readers understand why many so‑called “assured results” of modern scholarship may rest on questionable assumptions.
What you’ll experience
- A layperson-friendly look at how language study and textual evidence shape biblical interpretation
- Arguments that rely on documented sources, not speculation
- Examples of how ancient literary forms and laws compare across cultures
- A defense of upholding historical claims about the Old Testament through careful, patient research
Ideal for readers who want a practical, evidence-driven view of biblical criticism and its foundations, without heavy jargon or hype.

Robert Dick Wilson (4 February 1856 – 11 October 1930) was one of the most educated and accomplished scholars of his time, in the study of the Old Testament, and wrote several books. He opposed the “Higher Criticism” of the Old Testament. He could read the New Testament in nine languages, and graduated from Princeton at age 20. He eventually knew 45 languages and dialects. This book was originally published in two parts; one was a discussion of lower criticism titled: The Lower Criticism of the Old Testament as a Preparation for the Higher Criticism. It is actually an address by the author upon his receiving the post of Professor of Semitic Philology and Biblical Criticism at Princeton, in May of 1900. It also includes a charge, or commission, to Rev. Wilson by Rev. Marcus A. Brownson, D.D. The second part is a short book called, Is the Higher Criticism Scholarly? He explains the claims made by others, and proves them false, of there being major problems with the Old Testament. Footnotes appear after each paragraph, since there are no pages in eBooks. The chapter divisions were added to aid in navigation in eBook format.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical accuracy of the Old Testament, specifically examining its accounts of the ancient world. The author challenges the claims of "higher criticism" ââ â a school of thought that questioned the historical reliability of the Bible, arguing that the Old Testament contains factual details that align with extra-biblical historical sources, including those from Babylonian, Egyptian, and Persian cultures. The book meticulously analyzes the Old Testament texts, exploring linguistic evidence like the presence of foreign words and phrases, as well as the chronological order of kings and historical events. It argues that the presence of certain languages in the texts directly correlates with the historical periods in which those languages were influential in the region, supporting the Bible's internal chronology and the accuracy of its historical claims. By closely examining the Old Testament's portrayal of ancient law, ceremonies, and religious practices, the author provides compelling evidence for the authenticity of the text and the depth of its historical knowledge. This book offers a compelling defense of the Old Testament, illuminating its significance as a historical document and reaffirming its relevance for modern readers.
