Excerpt from A Plot Against the People: A History of the Audacious Attempt by Certain Kentucky Straight Whisky Interests to Pervert the Pure Food Law in Order to Create a Monopoly for Their Fusel Oil Whiskies and to Outlaw All Refined Whiskies
We are truly delighted to learn from yours of the loth that you like our pamphlet and expect its circulation to commend you to the people of the United States. That being the case, you will, of course, be glad to aid us in giving it the widest possible distribution: we, therefore, invite you to send us ex tensive lists of names and addresses. The pamphlet is in very active demand, but the field is large, and while we are about it we wish you to get all the credit to which you are entitled; and we do not mind the expense, considerable though it is.
It is true that the numerous letters we have received from readers of the book do not altogether bear out your expectations: they indicate that the average man has intelligence enough to judge for himself what the facts of the Whisky Controversy show. We have never agreed with those who say that the public are mostly fools, but that has seemed to us to be your estimate of them for a very long time.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book recounts a fascinating and contentious period in American history, the early 20th century, where the debate over the definition of "whisky" raged. It centers on the efforts of certain Kentucky distillers to secure a monopoly on the American whisky market by exploiting the newly enacted Pure Food Law. The author exposes the Kentucky distillers' deceptive claims, particularly their insistence that "straight whisky," containing high levels of fusel oil, was the only genuine form of the spirit. The book delves into the heated controversy surrounding Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, Chief Government Chemist, and his sudden and baffling change of stance on the issue of fusel oil. The author meticulously examines Dr. Wiley's inconsistent pronouncements and perplexing actions, demonstrating the dangers of blindly trusting authority figures, even those seemingly dedicated to public good. The author reveals the shocking degree to which Dr. Wiley's distorted interpretation of the Pure Food Law threatened to undermine its very purpose and create a government-sanctioned monopoly. The author reveals the machinations of the Kentucky distillers, their manipulation of public perception and their blatant disregard for the health and well-being of consumers. The book serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for critical thinking and vigilance against those who seek to exploit laws for personal gain, exposing the corrupting influence of power and the vulnerability of public trust in the face of deception.
