Some Side-Lights Upon Edward Fitzgerald's Poem (Classic Reprint): The Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam - Couverture souple
Synopsis
Discover how centuries of Persian poetry helped shape FitzGerald’s celebrated Ruba'i, and why scholars still debate its roots.
This scholarly study traces Edward Heron-Allen’s deeper look into the sources and influences behind the famous poem. It examines how Omar Khayyam’s quatrains, Hafiz, Sa’adi, Attar, and other Persian works fed into FitzGerald’s rendering, and how editors and manuscripts shaped the final verses. The book also outlines the key manuscripts and translations that informed the work, and presents a chronological view of literary influence from early editions to later scholarship.
- Maps the material FitzGerald relied on, including manuscripts and contemporary translations.
- Explains how Persian poets and critics influenced the English rendition’s direction and tone.
- Offers a measured discussion of what the poem is and is not, in terms of translation and adaptation.
- Situates the work within a broader tradition of cross-cultural literary exchange.
Ideal for readers of literary criticism, those curious about Omar Khayyam, and fans of FitzGerald’s poem seeking deeper context.
