After a rainy and short voyage across the English Channel, the author and his party were met with much misfortune, including ridiculously cramped and filthy conditions on the small steamer, as well as delays and confusion when they reached the French port of Dieppe and were misled by an English-speaking Irish hotel proprietress. The author made up for these unpleasant experiences by exploring the town and the countryside, and enjoyed many aspects of the French culture and environment. His party then took a diligence to Rouen, and from there traveled by rail to Paris. The author's description of Paris in the mid-19th century emphasizes its grandeur and the lively atmosphere of its people, remarking on how the city blends elements of great historical significance with the everyday concerns, and even trivialities, of human existence. His family's four-day visit to Paris included not only attendance at the theatre but also strolls through the Louvre's extensive art galleries, a visit to the magnificent Palace of Versailles, and a thoughtful and moving meditation on mortality during a military funeral at the Hospital of Invalids. This book offers a rich tapestry of historical travelogue, cultural commentary, and personal reflection.
