Synopsis

A witty, nostalgic slice of life as a family trades Lucknow’s heat for cool hill air and new adventures.

The book is a humorous memoir set in colonial India, following a narrator who moves from Lucknow to the hills with family and servants in tow. It blends lively family dynamics with vivid scenes of travel, bungalow life, and the quirks of Indian stations and roads. Readable, entertaining, and grounded in real pictures of daily life and small adventures in the hill country.

From the bustle of Lucknow to the slow, smoky lanes of a Dak bungalow and the search for a suitable hill home, the narrative stays light, observational, and humane. Expect colorful characters, warm humor, and a storyteller’s eye for the ordinary moments that make a big journey memorable.

  • Lighthearted portraits of family, servants, and pets navigating heat, travel, and change
  • Detailed scenes of moving house, booking a bungalow, and settling into hill life
  • Colorful travel episodes, village encounters, and the quirks of colonial India
  • A candid, personable voice that invites readers into a true, if witty, life story

Ideal for readers who enjoy humorous memoirs, travel writing, and stories of life in India during the colonial era.

Excerpt from To Let

Indolent; but Aggie rouses him up, and pushes him to the front, and keeps him there. She knows all about his department, his prospects of promotion, his prospects of furlough, of getting acting appointments, and so on, even better than he does himself. The chief of Tom's department - have I said that Tom is in the Irritation Office - has placed it solemnly on record that he con siders little Mrs. Shandon a surprisingly clever woman. The two children, Bob and Tor, are merry, oppressively active monkeys, aged three and five years respectively. As for myself, I am tall, fair - and I wish I could add pretty! But this is a true story. My eyes are blue, my teeth are white, my hair is red - alas, a' blazing red; and I was, at this period, nineteen years of age; and now I think I have given a sufficient outline of the whole family.
