The Smithsonian Institution, originally established in 1846 to house national collections, received this museum as one of its early components. Its goals include research and education, focusing on the preservation and display of artifacts that represent the nation's heritage. Like other institutions in its early years, it depended on the activities of private collectors and government explorers for the majority of its acquisitions. However, the author explains that the museum has been rapidly expanding in recent decades. Its collections have increased significantly, spurred by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904. Its variety of exhibits has also grown - to the point that the museum has had to find extra storage space due to its ever-increasing size. Although this expansion has led to a strain on resources, it has also enabled the museum to provide a broader educational experience for its visitors and researchers.
