Der Reichstagsabgeordnete Philipp Scheidemann (1865-1939) gehörte zum engsten Führungszirkel der SPD zwischen Kaiserreich und der Weimarer Republik. Bei Kriegsende am 9. November 1918 proklamierte er in Berlin die Republik und war danach für kurze Zeit Regierungschef. In seinem 1921 veröffentlichten Buch schildert er aus eigenem Erleben die dramatischen politischen Prozesse während des Weltkriegs. Was sein Buch dabei besonders interessant macht, ist die aus intimer Kenntnis gespeiste Darstellung der schweren Auseinandersetzungen zwischen linkem und rechtem Flügel in der SPD, die schließlich zur Parteispaltung führten und die Weimarer Republik von Anfang an schwer belasteten. Nachdruck der 1921 in Berlin erschienenen Erstausgabe.
