This book provides a source investigation of Assyrian history, focusing on the sources for its earlier half, particularly the inscriptions from the reign of Tiglath Pileser I (1100 B.C.) up to Ashur-bani-apli (668-626 B.C.). Rather than a simple bibliography, this book delves into the development of historical writing among the Assyrians. It is a study of the sources themselves, discovering which of the various documents are contemporary with the events they narrate, and on these alone, the author bases his history of the period. The author argues that the earlier Assyrian inscriptions were derived from Babylonian models and had little historical data. It wasn't until the reign of Arik-den-ilu that actual annalistic inscriptions appear, and even then they were little more than lists of places captured and booty taken. True history begins with Tiglath Pileser I's reign (1100 B.C.) and gradually develops through the reigns of Ashur-nasir-apal and Shalmaneser III. This book will appeal to serious students of Assyrian history who are looking for a solid foundation in the sources.
