Southern Exposure does not pretend to present a complete or altogether pleasing view of the South. Some Defender-of-the South has observed, It is possible to become so concerned over the plight of the sharecropper as to forget how the good earth smells at dawn et cetera. I know this to be true from personal experience. But it seems to me that the sharecroppers plight deserves priority over the earths smell. Perhaps one reason why I have written this book is to enable me to inhale the South svaried smells with a clear conscience. No one could appreciate moonlight and magnolias more than I; but the South has had more than its share of literature on that theme, and under the circumstances, I for one am not inclined to provide more. Suffice it to say that I am attached to my birthplace and home; I like much of what the South is, and still more of what it is to be. ..

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a compelling and unflinching account of the South during a pivotal era in American history. The author delves into the economic and social conditions of the region, exposing the stark reality of poverty and its devastating impact on the lives of both Black and white Southerners. The narrative unravels the legacy of slavery, exploring how the post-Civil War era saw the rise of a new order of exploitation that, while not explicitly chattel slavery, perpetuated a cycle of poverty and disenfranchisement. The book meticulously analyzes the intertwined forces of economic disparity, racial injustice, and political maneuvering that defined the South in this period. The author provides a starkly honest depiction of the South's deep-seated problems, from the prevalence of hunger and disease to the lack of adequate housing and education. He also examines the rise of tenant farming and its devastating consequences for both land and people. Through a combination of historical analysis and poignant social commentary, the author illuminates the complexities of the South's struggle for economic and social justice. The book's unflinching portrayal of the South's challenges underscores the enduring importance of understanding this regionââ â¢s history and its impact on the national narrative.
