The author argues that Cooley's book misrepresents people's words and actions, plagiarizes from other sources, includes unnecessary illustrations, and ultimately fails to provide any meaningful insights into Egypt. The reviewer is particularly critical of Cooley's attacks on John Glidden, the American consul, whom Cooley accuses of corruption and dereliction of duty, accusations the reviewer claims are entirely without basis in fact.
