Excerpt from Russian Political Institutions
Some time ago, meeting occasionally with Professor Bryce, author of The American Commonwealth, I heard him say he was astonished not to see the appearance of a book on the history and present state of political institu tions in Russia. Of course Englishmen have the excellent work of Mackenzie Wallace, rich in personal information collected by that author during a long stay in Russia; and the French, the profound and pleasantly written treatise of A. Leroy-beaulieu, The Empire of the Czars. But neither of these authors has seen fit to call the attention of the public to the special question of the evolution of the Russian political regime. I was obliged, therefore, to share in Professor Bryce's astonishment, and even to take his remark as an indirect hint for me to supply the lack in sources of information for Europeans on this subject, by a short sketch of Russia's institutional development.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces the origins and development of political institutions in Russia over the course of a millennium, from its roots in cultural, geographical, and ethnic factors, to its position as a European power. The author examines the medieval period up to the reign of Alexander II. The book goes beyond political history, examining legal, military, university, and press reforms across this period, as well as shedding light on the Russian serfdom system, and the emancipation of serfs. The book concludes by examining the role of absolute power in Russia, and the ways in which Russia tried and sometimes failed to imitate European models of political organization. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
