Der vertrag will vorurteile bekampfen, die weit ver breitet und durch literarhistorische tradition geheiligt sind, er will der herrlichen altnordischen Sprache neue freunde werben. Ich habe, so gut es ging, die alten dichter selbst für sich sprechen lassen. Da[s ich ihre kunstvollen verse in schlichter prosa wiedergebe, dafs ich hier und da eine schwierigkeit verhülle, wird jeder verstehen, der die skalden poesie kennt. Mit anmerkungen wollte ich diese anspruchs lose erste belehrung nicht belasten, ich habe mich auf das notwendigste beschränkt. Ermutigt sie einen zur wanderung in das ihm bisher unbekannte land, so wird er den weg schon zu finden wissen.1.
