Synopsis

Explore the forces behind Bristol’s upheaval and how local politics shaped a nation’s crisis.

This study examines the competing forces of Whig, Tory, and Radical thought in Bristol, and how local power structures, including the magistracy and the corporation, contributed to a city-wide eruption. It also looks at the West Indian slave debate and its echo in urban sentiment, helping readers understand how public opinion, leadership, and frustration can collide into violence.

  • Insight into how local authorities and civic institutions interacted during a time of unrest

  • Discussion of the radical movement and its appeal to diverse urban groups

  • Context for how national politics can flare into local crises

Ideal for readers of 19th-century British history and those seeking a grounded account of how riots unfold, from causes to consequences.
