It may seem to be audaiious beyond measure to attempt to weave into aC hristmas Number such forbidding and heterogeneous topics as death duties, bimetallism, agricultural depression, and the war in theO rient; but if fortune favours. the brave, I may at least hope for good luck ia my enterprise. For the title I owe my acknowledgments to the Countess of Warwick; the characters, with few exceptions, are borrowed from real life, and most of them I fear are but thinly disguised.
