Synopsis
This book sets out to explore the history of the Castilian language, from its early beginnings to its modern form. The author's stated goal is to provide a source of information for those interested in the language, and to give a broad overview for those unfamiliar with its history, and its development from Latin to Castilian. The book also explores the rich vein of Spanish literature going back to the 14th century and brings the reader through the great poets and writers of Spain, showing how their contributions shaped the Castilian language. The author shows how historical events such as the Arab invasion of Spain and the mingling of different cultures within the region shaped the development of this language and gives the reader a highly informative insight into the changes Castilian underwent as it became the language of poets, philosophers, and scholars from medieval times to the present day.

A gain is the author of this grammar called upon to acknowledge his gratitude to the American public, for the distinguished patronage extended to his feeble efforts. The consciousness of having been induced in all his literary labours by no other view than that of being useful to acountry from which he has received the greatest testimonials of esteem and hospitality, is to him a greater reward, than all the advantages usually derived from the most successful productions. With these sentiments, neither approbation, nor censure has ever had any other tendency in his mind, than that of endeavouring, by research and study, to render this, and other works more and more practically useful. In regard to this grammar, he has only to say, that every succeeding edition from the publication of the first, bears ample testimony to what is now advanced. It had always been the intention of the author to uffer the public a classic as well as a school book. But owing to a multiplicity of conflicting circumstances, it has only been accomplished in this fourth edition how well the public must judge. No rule subject to contrariety of opinion has been left unsupported by one or more quotations of some author, generally acknowledged to be classic.
