Two lovers meet by the North Lour and a wedding looms over a faintly haunted estate, where longing meets duty.
Set in a windswept Scottish countryside, this excerpt follows Gilbert Speid and Cecilia as they navigate a charged encounter that could redefine their lives. The scene blends lush landscape with a tense romance, as characters weigh inheritance, social expectations, and the pull of true affection.
What you’ll experience
- A vivid sense of place: rivers, beech trees, old houses, and looming hills
- Intimate character moments, from guarded glimpses to a bold, transformative confession
- A story poised between romance and obligation, with a looming marriage at Morphie Kirk
- A stylistic glimpse of internal voices shaping perception and emotion
Ideal for readers of sweeping historical romances that intertwine love, duty, and landscape.

Before proceeding with this story I must apologise for a striking inaccuracy which it contains. I have represented the educated characters as speaking, but for certain ttuns of phrase, the ordinary English which is now universal. But, in Scotland, in the very early nineteenth century, gentle and simple alike kept a national distinction of language, and remnants of it Ungered in the conversation, as I remember it, of the two venerable and unique old ladies from whom the characters of Miss Hersey Robertson and her sister are taken. They called it Court Scots. For the assistance of that tender person, the General Reader, I have ignored it. V.J. 1904.
