At this date no apology is needed for a small book on the subject of superheat and superheaters, because there should never be required an apology for writing a book upon any process in the arts and manufactures which will enable a consumer of fuel to consume less fuel without incurring great expense, fuel being the life of most of our modern industries, and, moreover, being a natural product the further manufacture of which inN ature slaboratory is not proceeding, at least in those areas from which it is at present being extracted, with great rapidity. Since the use of superheated steam is essential to the best economy of fuel it is necessary that the process of superheating should be one that commends itself to steam-users, to the men on whom we are calling to practise economies. It is therefore essential that superheating should be an operation that can be carried on with a minimum of anxiety and risk, that it should be at least as regular as the other stages of steam production. All processes that have passed through a period of experimentation are very apt to acquire the character of uncertainty and non-reliableness.
