This is a book, and nothing else. There are no advertisements in it. It has not been eonstructed or modified to please or displease anybod3 I think the title fairly describes the book: that it is what it professes to be a picture of civilization, in its rise and in the various stages of the short period of its progress, in Davis count ,I owa, otherwise the Hairy Nation. The plan of reviewing each topic, from the beginning to the present, separately, seemed to me the best, as affording the best hope of holding the interest of the reader to the end. The history of the settlement of the United States may be divided into three periods, as distinct in manner as in time. The first covers the settlement of the Atlantic coast and a fringe west of the A lleghanies.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating account of the early settlement of Davis County, Iowa, a region the author affectionately refers to as the "Hairy Nation." The book offers a unique perspective on the development of American civilization, examining the transition from the wild, uncharted wilderness to a burgeoning community. Through the lens of Davis Countyââ â¢s history, the author explores the clash of cultures between the native Sac and Fox tribes and the arriving white settlers, chronicling the gradual shift in power and the changing ways of life. Drawing on personal experiences, vivid descriptions, and historical records, the author takes the reader on a captivating journey through the regionââ â¢s formative years. He delves into the lives of the original inhabitants, the Sac and Fox people, describing their customs, clothing, and traditions. He then charts the arrival of the white settlers, their pioneering spirit, and the unique social landscape that unfolded as they built their homes, communities, and institutions. From early log cabins to the advent of the frame house, the author captures the evolution of architecture and the impact of new technologies on the growth of the community. The authorââ â¢s keen observations and engaging style bring the past to life, revealing a microcosm of the broader story of westward expansion in the United States. The book stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as well as a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the American West.
