The author analyzes the pivotal ideas of the time, including those of Agassiz, Beaumont, Dana, Hall, and Murchison. The author illustrates how these ideas fell short in explaining key geological observations. He instead makes his case and presents a new theory for orographic phenomena and the internal composition of the earth. The crux of the authorâs theory is that mountains are formed by the exible crust of the earth undulating in response to the expansion of molten matter and gaseous vapors beneath the surface. This upward tension was relieved by linear fractures, through which much of the vapor escaped. The sudden release of the pressure produced violent pulsations on the surface of the liquid, which were communicated to the overlying crust, which was thus thrown into a series of exures, that were keyed into the permanent forms they now have by the intrusion of molten matter. This book is an important historical document, still relevant to geologists and scholars in the Earth Sciences today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
