These designs were intended as patterns for tapestries, and although popular in the 16th century, almost nothing has been written about them individually, rather, they have always been examined as a whole. This book redresses the balance by looking at each cartoon and its history individually, and positioning them within the period in which they were made and within the historical and religious tradition which informed them. The author shows how the idea of the Renaissance is not borne out by Raphael's work, instead showing the artist as a man of the Middle Ages, conforming to the style and ideas of the Gothic period.
