Die ungünstige Aufnahme, die das Fragment fast allenthalben fand, das Stocken der poetischen Produktion Goethes in den nächsten Jahren liess die Arbeit am „faust wieder lange Zeit hindurch ruhen, und schwerlich hätte er sich entschlossen, von neuem daranzugehen, hätte nicht Schiller seit der ersten Annäherung der beiden Grossen im Sommer 1794 unablässig auf die Vollendung gedrängt. Ihm haben wir es zu danken, dass Goethe zum dritten Male sich dem „faust zuwandte, einen neuen.
