Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the impact of the Roman Empire on the local laws and customs of the diverse regions under its dominion. It begins with the Greek colonial period as a backdrop to understand the influence of Greek ideas and institutions on the formation of a new, hybrid system of law within the Roman provinces. The study investigates how the Romans extended their own legal framework while allowing for the preservation of many local traditions and institutions. By investigating legal practices in various provinces, from Egypt to Gaul, the author highlights the interplay of Roman universalism and local particularism, shedding light on how law functioned in the everyday lives of people living under Roman rule.
