Zebumsa. An Eastern beauty, young and fair, All Houri-like, was standing there, And tenderly she gazed on me, Half lovingly, half bashfully. She spoke I strove to understand But, with a smile, she waved her hand, And pointing to an aged crone, She quietly loosed the silver zone(2) That fondly clasped her slender waist, And threw it to me then, in haste, She beckoned to her, and was gone, Leaving me dazed, and all alone! And there I lay, well pleased to be The hero of such mystery, For many an hour, until the stars Shone softly through the tall chenars,(3) And all around the fire-flies danced: And still I lay there, half-entranced, Yet listening to the faintest sound, Impatiently I glanced around, From time to time, in hope to see Some messenger, expectantly.
