Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book recounts the authorâs experiences during a week-long visit he made to the battlefields of northern France in 1915 during World War I. The author was an Irish politician and Member of Parliament deeply involved in Irish nationalism. As a supporter of the Irish Parliamentary Party, he took a role in Irish affairs and was regularly involved in discussing Irelandâs political future. The book contains the authorâs diary entries, in which he documents his observations of the war, the treatment of the injured, and the role of Irishmen in the British Army. He describes the extensive supply and ammunition arrangements that were in place and expresses admiration for the work being carried out in the hospitals and convalescent facilities. He also describes his meetings with senior British and French military figures and his address to troops at various locations on the front lines. He was particularly impressed by the presence of many Irishmen, from all parts of Ireland, who had volunteered to serve. The authorâs account of his visit to the front lines provides a firsthand insight into the conditions experienced by soldiers during World War I and the authorâs reflections on the role of Ireland and Irish people in the conflict.
