Rethinking Falstaff: a fresh, measured view of a stage icon
This scholarly essay offers a thoughtful look at Sir John Falstaff, challenging old judgments and exploring how character, emotion, and performance shape our sense of courage and wit on the stage.
The author steps back from common labels to argue that Falstaff’s charm and flaws arise from a complex mix of feeling and understanding. Through close reading, the work examines how dramatic craft works to shape our view of virtue, vice, and the man behind the mask.

As an author he was always anonymous, and sometimes his reserve went further, as for instance when he refused a pressing demand for a second edition of the Falstaff essay, or when he strictly enjoined his executrix to destroy compositions of his which, according to an intelligent critic, would have planted a permanent laurel on his grave. In poliflc again he seems to have preferred exercising his great abilities in other mens names to coming forward as his own spokesman. Such a nature is not likely to make much impression on contemporary records, and several important questions about Morgann slife are still unanswered. Morgann was born in London in 1726 and died there in 1802.
