This book explores the history of Japanese immigration and settlement in the United States, with a particular focus on California. The author, an expert on Japanese-American relations, presents a nuanced and fact-based perspective that challenges the sensationalized and often alarmist rhetoric that has characterized much of the public discourse on this topic. Through a careful analysis of data and historical events, the book sheds light on the significant contributions made by Japanese immigrants to California's economy and society, while also acknowledging the challenges and prejudices they have faced. The book offers a valuable and timely examination of a complex and often misunderstood subject.

This is a book of optimism based upon facts. It presents no gloomy picture of the Japanese in A merica. Nor does it sound an alarmist note as to the future relations between our two countries. On the contrary it believes in the innate capacity of the Japanese to live harmoniously with the A mericans, and their ability to emerge happily from their present plight incident ,to an organized campaign of slander and fabrication that has been directed against them during the last several years. It entertains faith in the sound common sense which will enable the leaders of the two peoples to arrive at an amicable solution of the question so befogged by this propaganda. The author extends no helping hand to anti Japanese agitation. He would fain leave that noble task in the able hands of Messrs. Phelan, Mc Clatchy, Johnson, Hearst, Crothers etal and their holy allies the newspapers of California.
