This tale, as the title-page implies, is founded on fact. I ts truth is its chief merit, and the Author claims no other share in it, than that of telling it to the best of her power. I do not mean to aver that every word is a positive and literal truth, that every incident occurred exactly as I have related it, and in no other fashion, but this I mean to say: that I have invented nothing in the character of Rachel Gray, and that the sorrows of Richard Jones are not imaginary sorrows. My purpose in giving this story to the world is twofold. I have found that my first, and in many respects, most imperfect work Madeleine, is nevertheless that which has won the greatest share of interest and sympathy; a result tdsk .

While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints.
