It has been the authors aim to present the most important characteristics of German syntax from the point of view of the English language. Completeness has not been intended; on the contrary, it has seemed desirable to exclude, on the one hand, everything which is quite natural and self-understood and offers no serious difl Bculty to the pupil, and, on the other hand, all uncommon forms and constructions, both English and German. The author can hardly expect that his judgment has been uniformly correct in this matter. I f, however, the directions contained in the following pages enable the student to find at least one correct and fairly idiomatic German rendering for every ordinary construction in simple English prose, the purpose of the book has been accomplished. Those who have had experience in teaching German Composition will probably agree that the subject is difficult enough to justify the relatively limited scope of the book. In a few cases, things which may appear to present no special difficulties have been included, in order to explain more difficult points connected with them; and it has also seemed desirable to include certain constructions which, while not of frequent occurrence in the best English prose, are yet very common in familiar discourse, and will, therefore, surely be attempted in German, as soon as the pupil begins to express his own thoughts.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an extensive comparison of German and English syntax, explaining German syntax from the perspective of the English speaker. The author's intention is not to provide an exhaustive treatment of every conceivable German construction or feature, but instead to highlight the most important and common aspects that present difficulties to English speakers learning German. The book covers all parts of speech, including articles, nouns, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs. Special attention is paid to verbs, including the use of tenses, subjunctive, modal auxiliaries, infinitives and participles. The author also discusses a variety of complex constructions, such as those involving word order and the use of certain prepositions and conjunctions. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding the grammatical structure and logical arrangement of German sentences. By approaching German syntax from a comparative perspective, learners can gain a deeper understanding of the language and avoid common pitfalls. The insights provided in this book will enable English speakers to communicate effectively in German, both in writing and verbally.
