Présentation de l'éditeur

This third edition, as it now appears, is the result of co-operation and united effort on the part of many library workers, and it is the hope and belief of the Board that the present work has been so well done that no revision need be undertaken for a number of years to come. For a statement of the special features embodied, and explanation of certain policies followed reference may be made to the editors introduction. In the case of such liberal, hearty and wide-spread assistance as the Board and its editors have here received it is difficult to mention personally all those to whom credit is due. Gratitude is sincerely felt toward all who responded to the call of the editor in sending requested information, or who devoted no small time and effort to the work during the personal visits of the editor in charge. The Board feels, however, that particular mention must be made of the courtesy and helpfulness extended by the Library of Congress during an extended study of the catalog by Miss Crawford, by the Newark free public library, which so generously provided working quarters for her for over a year, and by the Buffalo public library, which has similarly furnished accommodations for the past year for Miss Briggs. It trusts that all who have so generously aided in this enterprise may feel abundantly paid by the good service to the library profession which this book now goes forth to render.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
