The debate by which the following argument was called forth, was originally intended for only two evenings. Meantime, there occurred a debate on the same subject before theN ew York Lyceum, in which the Rev. Dr. Cox, and Horace Greeley, Esq. were among the speakers. There occured also a second evenings debate between these two gentlemen, each occupying one hour. After this came the second evening of the debate between Mr. OS ullivan and the author of the present argument. At the close of that evening Mr. OS ullivan unexpectedly challenged his opponent to continue the discussion one evening longer, and this invitation being accepted, the whole debate was thus protracted through five evenings in five weeks. The following argument embraces the debate of three of those evenings, on the side against the abolition of capital punishment. The question as stated was as follows: Resolved, That Capital Punishment ought to be abolished. The Report of the argument appeared originally, with some omissions, in theN ew York Evangelist. In the present volume one or two paragraphs are added, which the author was compelled to omit in the discussion for want of time. Some critical remarks on the statute in Genesis, have been also given at the close of the third evenings argument, in addition to the preceding examination of it.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book approaches a contentious issue: should capital punishment be abolished? The author, a powerful orator, presents a persuasive argument that the death penalty should be maintained. Grounded in religious precepts and philosophical reasoning, the author builds a robust case for the law's preservation. Delving into scriptural texts from Genesis to Revelation, the author unpacks the notion of capital punishment as a divine mandate necessary to protect society. The book also tackles concerns of detractors, addressing arguments of vindictiveness and the evolving nature of society. The author contends that divine benevolence necessitates punishment for heinous crimes, and that the penalty of death serves a greater purpose by deterring evil and upholding justice. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a comprehensive exploration of capital punishment, its historical and religious context, and its continued relevance in contemporary society.
