The convention was called in response to the declaration of war against Great Britain by the United States Congress on June 18th of that year. The delegates to the convention were opposed to the war and sought to repeal the law declaring it. They believed that the war was unnecessary and that it would be detrimental to the interests of the United States. The convention issued an address to the people of New Jersey in which they outlined their objections to the war and called for a change in the administration. The address also called for the election of delegates to a national convention to nominate candidates for president and vice president who would oppose the war.
