Yates, a 19th-century American who was, by all accounts, the greatest checker player of his era, if not the greatest of all time. In a golden age of the game, when brilliant Scottish players regularly came to America to challenge the best of the US at matches, Yates was more than their equal - he was unbeatable. Born in Brooklyn in 1857, Yates was a very bright but private and serious child, given to solitary pursuits like reading and checkers. He was a self-taught checker prodigy whose exceptional memory and analytical ability led him to a deep understanding of the gameâs tactical possibilities. Yet he was also a gracious and generous opponent, who played for the love of the game, not for personal glory. After Yatesâs retirement from professional play to pursue a medical career, the author recounts the stories and anecdotes told by those who knew him, including his remarkable ability to play blindfolded, using only his incredible visualization skills to keep track of the game. In one memorable exhibition, Yates played twenty-five simultaneous blindfolded games at once, winning all but one. Yates died young, at the age of 28, but the author makes a case for him as the greatest checker player who ever lived and one of the greatest minds ever to grapple with the strategy and tactics of board games.
