Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. In two Navy Letter Books and an Order Book spanning 1780-1782, Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney offers an exclusive glimpse into the strategies and challenges of the British Navy during Rodney's time as commander-in-chief in the West Indies. The books provide a window into the victories, defeats, and personal struggles faced by Rodney and his fleet. At the outset of his command, Rodney faced a Spanish convoy off the coast of Spain and defeated a Spanish fleet near Cape St. Vincent, a spectacular victory that made him a hero in Great Britain. Back in the West Indies in 1780, he captured a rich Spanish convoy and won an indecisive battle near Martinique, in which neither side gained an advantage. After a brief visit to New York in October and November 1780, he was informed of the war against the States General of Holland and quickly attacked and captured the Dutch island of St. Eustatius. The capture of St. Eustatius was followed by a rapid series of maneuvers and skirmishes, culminating in the Battle of the Saintes on April 12, 1782, where Rodney's decisive victory over the French fleet restored British prestige and saved Jamaica from imminent danger.
