Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a method for estimating the displacement, strain, stress, and their derivatives in the interior of a thin plate that is sufficiently thin, has sufficiently small strains, and whose particles are sufficiently far from the edge of the plate. This method relies on the existence of a strain energy function that is analytic in the strain invariants, as well as on the existence of sufficiently many continuous derivatives of the displacement functions. The author starts by deriving estimates for the stresses and their derivatives in plates whose thickness-diameter ratio and strains are sufficiently small. Using an expression for the displacements in terms of the vertical displacement of the middle surface and a stress function, the author obtains formulas for the displacements, strains, and stresses in terms of the vertical displacement and the stress function. The differential equations and formulas obtained are used to derive simplified plate equations, which can be valid even when the strains are relatively large. The author concludes by presenting a method for simplifying the results that is valid when the strains are small with relatively large bending permitted, which makes it possible to apply the results to very small strains with relatively large bending. The method and results presented will be useful to engineers and other researchers who work in the field of plate theory.
