The Opera is in four A cts. The action takes place at Venice, in the 17th century. The chief personages are LaG ioconda, a street ballad singer, whose gayety and light-heartedness have gained for her that title ;her blind mother, La Cieca ;L aura, and her husband, A vviso Badoero, chief of the Council of Ten; Enzo Grimaldo, Prince of Santa-F ior, a Genoese noble, originally the betrothed of Laura, who has been forced to marry A lvise, but still cherishes her affection for Enzo; Is po, a public letter-writer; Zu xe, a boatman, and Barnaba, chief spy of the Council of Ten. Barnaba loves La Gioconda, who spurns his advances, being passionately in love with Enzo, whom she supposes to be a mercantile captain. In A ct I the scene is the grand courtyard of the Ducal Palace, decorated for festivities. The stage is filled with holiday folks, awaiting the signal for the regatta. Barnaba watches the throng, and when they depart he observes La Gioconda, who brings her blind mother to her usual seat near the church, and then departs, repulsing Barnaba. The people return, bringing the winner of the regatta prize, and the unsuccessful Zu nE. Barnaba, who believes that by getting La Cieca into his power he may win La Gioconda, persuades Zu ne that his defeat had been caused by La Cieca, whom he denounces as a sorceress. The populace threaten to kill her, when Enzo arrives, and protects her. A uviSE and Laura enter. La Cieca is freed through the intercession of Laura, on whom the blind woman bestows her rosary. Enzo and Laura recognize each other, and their glances are watched by Barnaba. When subsequently left alone with Enzo, he tells him that Laura shall be on board his ship, the Hecate, at nightfall, during her husbands absence at the Council. Enzo departs, and Barnaba summons Is po, to whom he dictates a letter, warning A evise that Laura is about to elope with Enzo. Gi
