The following scheme is based upon A merica: history and geography; preliminary and provisional scheme of classification, January, 1901, prepared by Charles Martel, Chief Classifier, whose counsel has been at my disposal throughout the revision. In the course of the past 13 years, during which I have had entire charge of A mericana, the collection has considerably more than doubled in size from transfers and new accessions; and it has been found necessary to expand certain sections and make extensive alterations in others. In the preparation of this edition copious explanations and references have been added. They are not exhaustive, and not designed to teach history; but are merely given as illustrating the usage of this library and as a guide to the location of related material in other classes. Charles
