Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a mathematical theory of wave propagation in a spherical layered atmosphere above a spherical earth. The dielectric constant of the atmosphere is stratified in a radial direction and can be applied to both ionospheric and tropospheric problems. The author shows that the propagation problem reduces to the solution of an ordinary differential equation, from which the author can derive useful approximations for the field using the W.K.B. method. The author also emphasizes the connections between this approach and the flat earth theory and modified index of refraction. The book concludes by summarizing the work for the electric dipole. This book will be of interest to physicists and mathematicians because of its clear exposition of the theory of propagation in an inhomogeneous atmosphere and its demonstration of how to obtain explicit results for a ductless atmosphere and how to obtain a quantitative method for propagation in a duct.
