Born in 1848, Grace played for Gloucestershire from 1865â"1899 and England from 1866â"1899. Known as "the Champion," he was an all-rounder who enjoyed much success as a batsman, bowler, and fielder. The author has been a friend of the Grace family and has used family papers, personal knowledge, and recollections to chronicle the sportsman's life. Grace, whose career spanned 44 years, played in more than 1,000 first-class matches, scoring more than 54,000 runs with 124 centuries and taking more than 2,800 wickets with 221 five-wicket hauls and 59 ten-wicket hauls in match innings. He was also instrumental in establishing county cricket and forming the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
