This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. This book compiles Spanish and Portuguese language and literature collections from the Boston Public Library, along with books in these disciplines donated by George Ticknor, a renowned expert in Spanish literature and professor at Harvard University. The collection he donated was carefully curated throughout his life and actively enhanced with the help of agents in Europe and elsewhere, to the point that it was said to have raised the prices of Spanish books in major book markets around the world. Ticknor's collection was begun in 1817 and continued until 1852, with some additional purchases made later to fill in gaps in his collection. His efforts played a major role in forming the Boston Public Library's Spanish language collection into one of the largest outside of Spain. A major focus of the collection is on the history and Belles Lettres of Spain. The collection also holds a large number of rare books, with the Ticknor collection alone holding over 111 pamphlet volumes containing over 540 pamphlets. These rare books are important due to their limited editions, indifference of authors, religious zeal, carelessness of the Spanish people, and loss due to war, making their preservation in this collection a significant resource for the study of Spanish language and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
