Synopsis

Explore the core ideas behind transformers and dynamos and how they transfer power efficiently.

This concise volume explains the electrical principles that govern magnetism, leakage, and regulation, helping readers understand how machines convert electrical energy into useful power and how loads affect performance. The text walks through the behavior of primary and secondary circuits, including how induced voltages, flux, and magnetizing forces interact. It also discusses practical design concerns, such as reducing leakage, predicting changes in current and power factor under load, and how armature reaction influences performance in generators and motors.

  • How a transformer maintains balance between the magnetizing force and induced electromotive force across varying loads
  • Effects of hysteresis and leakage on efficiency and voltage regulation
  • Differences between series-wound and shunt-wound dynamos and how their outputs are controlled
  • Practical considerations for armature design, flux distribution, and sparking limits
Ideal for readers seeking a clear, historically grounded introduction to transformer and dynamo fundamentals, with practical examples and industry context.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Electrical Engineering Leaflets have been pre1 pared for the purpose of presenting, concisely but accurately, some of the fundamental principles of electrical science, as employed in engineering practice. They have been arranged under three grades; namely, theE lementary, the I ntermediate, and the A dvancedc The Elementary Grade is intended for those electrical artisans, linemen, motormen, central station workmen, or electrical mechanics generally, who may not have advanced sufficiently far in their studies to warrant their undertaking the other grades. Here the mathematical treatment is limited to arithmetic, and the principles are illustrated by examples taken from actual practice. The Intermediate Grade is intended for students of electricity in high schools and colleges. In this grade a certain knowledge of the subjects of electricity and physics generally is assumed, and a fuller mathematical treatment is adopted. These leaflets, moreover, contain such information concerning the science of electricity, as should be acquired by those desiring general mental culture. The Advanced Grade is designed for students taking special courses in electrical engineering in colleges or universities. Here the treatment is more condensed and mathematical than in the other grades.
