The book explores these gender expressions through the prism of Gothic and sensation literature, arguing that these genres both reflected and contributed to a nuanced and complex understanding of gender identity, desire and sexuality. The author makes perceptive connections between literary representations and historical case studies, demonstrating that in Victorian Britain, 'difference' was not always a term of exclusion, but sometimes one of intrigue and acceptance.
