This book combines observations and analyses from over 70 drops of expendable bathythermographs to create a picture of the seasonal changes of ocean temperatures in the California Current. Temperature sections show the gradient of temperatures as the probe measures water temperature on its descent. One section details a complex structure of temperature maximums and minimums in the western boundary of the current, a feature that is characteristic of the outer edge of the California Current. The authors also describe near-surface temperature errors and failures that have occurred in some of the probes, and discuss the technical issues that have arisen during the project. The discussion of these issues provides insight into how the collection of oceanographic data can be improved for research and weather forecasting.
