Synopsis

Explore the roots and voices of Teutonic poetry through Runic and Heroic poems.

This edition gathers the Runic and Heroic poems with substantial introductions, textual notes, and translations that illuminate early Germanic verse. It presents the Runic alphabet, its origins, and how these ancient verses traveled across Anglo-Saxon, Norwegian, and Icelandic traditions, offering context for both scholars and curious readers. This scholarly collection is designed for students of Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse, while remaining accessible to newcomers. It lays out how Runic writing shaped early poetry and how later works echo these old forms, with careful apparatus to help readers understand the language, history, and literary connections.

  • Clear introductions that frame the Runic origin, alphabet, and the spread of Runic poems across regions.
  • Textual editions, translations, and notes for each major Runic and heroic piece.
  • Appendices and bibliographies that guide further study into related sagas, poetry, and philology.
  • A scholarly yet readable presentation that highlights the vivid battle imagery and enduring motifs of early Teutonic poetry.
Ideal for readers of literary history, philology, and poetry who want to understand how ancient Runic verse fits into the broader tapestry of Germanic epic and saga, and how editors approached these texts for modern readers.

Excerpt from Runic and Heroic Poems of the Old Teutonic Peoples

The second part of this work contains the extant fragments of anglo-saxon heroic poetry outside Beowulf and Widsith, which have been so admirably treated by Dr Chambers (cambridge, 1912 and Finn has, indeed, been edited by Dr Chambers as an appendix to Beowulf; but my notes were already complete when Beowulf appeared, and as I differ from him on various points - so much the worse for me in all probability - I have ventured to include it. It has been a labour of love: for Finn, mutilated and corrupt, is yet the fine flower of anglo-saxon heroic poetry. Full of rapid transitions and real poetic glow, the fight in Finn's beleaguered hall, lighted by the flash of swords and echoing with the din of combat, is one of the most vivid battle-pieces in any language - a theme too often worn threadbare by dull mechanical prentice-work in later anglo-saxon poetry, when versifying the scriptures became a devastating industry and the school of Cynewulf antici pated by some eight centuries the school of Boyd.
