Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the error analysis in arithmetic with varying relative precision. The author proposes two new floating-point arithmetics that aim to eliminate overflows and underflows from most computations. These arithmetics redistribute the available numbers to spread out the largest and smallest numbers much more thinly than in standard floating-point, thus achieving a larger range at the cost of lower precision at the ends of the range. This book demonstrates that for many codes, this eliminated effort will reappear in the error analyses needed to ascertain or guarantee the accuracy of the computed solution. Thus, reliability with respect to over/underflow has been traded for reliability with respect to roundoff. The author argues that as a result of this decreased relative accuracy at the extremes of the range, more care must be taken in doing the error analysis of many algorithms than is necessary in conventional floating-point. This book is essential reading for computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers interested in numerical analysis and computer arithmetic.
