Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book comprises the results of an extensive series of experiments on steel conducted by the author, for use in shipbuilding and boiler-making. The study consists of numerous steel plates and experimental boiler boxes that were burst by hydraulic pressure to evaluate the strength and suitability of these materials for various engineering applications. The data collected by the author shows that mild steel is a reliable material for these purposes, with a high tensile strength and resistance to stress, as well as the ability to exhibit significant bending and deformation without compromising its integrity. While the process of punching holes in steel plates was found to adversely affect their strength, the author demonstrates that this issue can be effectively mitigated by annealing the steel afterward, or by drilling the holes instead. The research in this book provides valuable insights into the properties of steel and its behavior under various conditions, making it a useful resource for engineers and professionals working with steel in shipbuilding and boiler-making.
