The author uses the example of the taking of interest for money to illustrate how theological opposition has slowed the progress of science. The author traces the evolution of the belief that taking interest for money is sinful from its roots in ancient Greek philosophy, through its development in the early Christian Church, and into its solidification as a dogma in the Middle Ages. The author shows how this dogma led to centuries of economic stagnation and the impoverishment of many people. It was not until the rise of Protestantism and the Enlightenment that this dogma began to be challenged and eventually overturned. The author concludes by arguing that the insights of this book are significant because they show how religious beliefs can sometimes hinder the progress of science and lead to negative consequences for society.
