Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a cross-sectional examination of the literary society formed in 1876 and known as the Ebell of Los Angeles. The history of the club is explored from a vantage point of decades of scholarship, resulting in a curated timeline of the events that made this club one of the most influential women's organizations in the region. This book is more than just a recitation of meeting minutes, as readers are provided with contextual information regarding the culture and history of late 19th century Los Angeles and the role that such organizations played in the social lives of women in that era. It illuminates how the study of the arts, literature, music, current events, and sciences expanded the horizons of women in Los Angeles when options for intellectual growth were limited. The book reveals women's strength and determination in the face of societal constraints and provides contemporary readers with insights into the subtle and overt ways that women worked to create lasting social and cultural changes. The Ebell of Los Angeles is the story of the journey of a group of women who had the vision to improve themselves, their community, and the world around them, making it well worth the time for anyone who wants to know more about the history of women's contributions to Los Angeles. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
