Hook line : Learn how ocean currents, temperature, and salinity shape salmon distribution across the North Pacific.
Two key cruises in spring 1968 link fish catches to oceanographic features south of the Aleutians, offering a detailed look at how environment drives salmon migration. This report compiles gear setups, ocean observations, and the resulting patterns across sockeye, chum, pink, coho, and chinook salmon, with maps and figures illustrating where different species concentrate and move.

This book presents the report of a cooperative research cruise made by Japanese and United States vessels to examine distribution of Pacific salmon and oceanographic features in the North Pacific. The research analyzed distribution data by species, maturity and age, with particular attention given to sockeye salmon. The findings show differences in distribution corresponding to species and maturity. Sockeye and pink salmon were in the more northerly and southerly waters, respectively, whereas chum salmon were more widely distributed across the sampled area. A shift to younger ages at more southern latitudes was apparent for sockeye, chum, and pink salmon, and immature sockeye and chum salmon were generally restricted to the more southern waters, while maturing fish were generally restricted to the more northern waters.
